The autumn blues, for many, starts in September. September is the start of a new school year, the return to work after a holiday, and the start of shorter and colder days. And with these changes, you can experience the following autumn blues symptoms: low mood, tiredness, fatigue, comfort eating, irritability, agitation, anxiety, and lack of energy. But there is a way you can fight back against these symptoms, and one of those ways is an autumn massage.

I’ve mentioned many times before in my other blog posts that massage therapy can reduce anxiety and depression. And you don’t have to take my word for it because studies have found that massage can help those with anxiety and depression.
When you receive a massage, your body releases serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is a chemical made in your body that allows your brain cells and nervous system cells to talk. It has many roles in the body, and one of those roles is believed to be related to your mood. It is believed that low levels of serotonin are associated with depression. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in your movement, memory, reward system, mood, and sleep, plus much more. Low levels of dopamine are known to cause fatigue, lack of motivation, inability to experience pleasure, mood swings, inability to concentrate, and forgetfulness. So by having a massage and increasing your serotonin and dopamine levels, you will be able to relieve some of the side effects linked to the autumn blues.
When you have the autumn blues, your low mood can cause your stress levels to increase. When you’re stressed your body releases the stress hormones that trigger the ‘fight or flight’ response. This response was designed to protect your body in an emergency when you need to act quickly (e.g. when a dinosaur is chasing you). However, when this stress hormone keeps triggering it can have a negative impact on your body. So, what can you do to reduce your stress levels? Well, you can have a massage, and studies have found that it can reduce your stress levels by reducing the production of cortisol (the stress hormone).
The change in weather can make it easier for you to catch colds and other illnesses. And we all know that being ill can further lower your mood and increase your stress levels, but you can fight back this autumn. A study has shown that massage therapy can boost your immune system which can reduce the risk of you catching a cold or the flu. The study found that a massage increased the number of lymphocytes (white blood cells). The lymphocytes have a role in helping your body to defend itself from germs and diseases.
If you have autumn blues, you are likely to experience insomnia and fatigue. But thanks to the power of an autumn massage you will find an improvement in your quality of sleep. Now a massage isn’t a magical cure, but a study has found that a massage can improve your sleep (so no more tossing and turning for you). How does a massage aid sleep, you ask? As previously mentioned, it increases serotonin, and it’s the serotonin that makes it easier for your body to produce melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates your sleep cycle.
